Thinking about selling an old toy collection?
Before listing anything, take some time to identify exactly what you own.
Small differences in packaging, production markings, accessories or condition can sometimes make a major difference to collectors.
Identify Before You Sell
Start by recording:
Character or model
Identify the character, vehicle or product as accurately as possible.
Manufacturer
Look underneath the toy and on any original packaging.
Product or production markings
Photograph numbers, copyright information, manufacturing locations and other markings.
Condition
Be realistic about wear, chips, scratches, broken pieces or missing accessories.
Packaging
Original packaging can matter to collectors, particularly when it is clean and unopened.
Take Good Photographs
Photograph the item from several angles.
For die-cast vehicles we recommend photographing:
- front
- both sides
- rear
- roof
- underside
- wheels
- packaging if present
- any damage or unusual markings
Good photographs reduce uncertainty for buyers.
Research the Market
Do not assume that the highest asking price you find represents the actual value of your toy.
Sellers can ask almost any price.
Compare multiple examples and pay attention to whether you are comparing the same release, condition and packaging.
Selling a Collection
A large collection may be sold individually, in groups or as one complete lot.
Selling items separately may produce a higher total price, but it also requires more photography, listing, packing and shipping.
Selling the entire collection can be faster but may produce a lower overall return.
